    London

UCL’s Sustainable Physical and Digital Places for Education and Research (SPiDER) group reflects a holistic approach to achieving the right physical and digital environments for UCL researchers and students.

The Group has been examining the conditions we will need so that UCL can adapt and thrive, become more sustainable, resilient and flexible, to support cross-disciplinary initiatives and external engagement in the future. These include reimagining the relationship between digital and physical spaces, and exploring tools which bridge this gap, to encourage collaboration, creativity and community.

The UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering is a key proponent of the work led by the SPiDER Group and is a primary stakeholder in the enhancement of existing university-level shared facilities and the development of new ones comprising a common set of shared tools that forms a focal point for a large user community, of typically several tens of people upwards.

Through this initiative particular opportunities emerge around enhancement of interdisciplinarity, robustness, sustainability, reproducibility, derisking research operations and improvement of usage.

The post holder will explore the interface between the digital and physical worlds, and will develop pipelines and software routines for automated experimentation to facilitate the digitalisation of experimental research across the life science and bioprocessing fields. The research focus will be on the evaluation of the quality, efficacy, and stability of therapeutic proteins and the engineering of novel clones with improved functionality profiles through directed evolution. This work will be led by Dr Duygu Dikicioglu and Prof. Gary Lye and is aligned to the EPSRC Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub.

This SPiDER post is available immediately, for 12 months in the first instance, and will foster the pioneering steps in moving these ideas forward.

Candidates will be required to hold a PhD in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g. Biochemical or Chemical Engineering) or a related subject area or in natural sciences reinforced with an emphasis on programming skills and/or interest in automation (e.g. Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Genetics), and possess experience in a number of the following areas: biochemical analyses, analytical procedures, molecular biology techniques, programming in a number of languages, application of computational workflows, or process automation.

The post will require a high degree of interaction with various end-users and stakeholders within the Department as well as across UCL, so excellent teamworking and communication skills are required. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking original programme development and workflow automation, reporting on project progress and the preparation and submission of research papers and white papers arising from this work.
