Research Fellow

The MRC-funded International Centre for Genomic Medicine in Neuromuscular Diseases (ICGNMD) was established in 2019 to build a deeply-phenotyped and genotyped international cohort of NMD patients and their families and to provide international training in clinical genomics of NMDs. The ICGNMD is led by UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology Director Professor Mike Hanna and has links to 14 Centres across Brazil, India, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and Brazil. Together we will expand internationally the beneficiaries of NMD interventions and therapies.

We are looking for a Research Fellow to undertake a combination of laboratory genetic testing and informatics analysis. The post-holder will develop and implement protocols for, and interpret results from, genetic tests for a range of rare neuromuscular diseases alongside interpreting and analysing high-throughput genetic test results. They will be responsible for the effective and timely delivery of robust ICGNMD research data.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent in biological sciences or genetics, or a related discipline and Honours degree (minimum 2:1) in Biological Sciences or a related discipline. Applicants will have experience of a range of human genetic testing procedures, e.g. triplet-repeat primed PCR, MLPA and Southern blotting and a good background in molecular biology or cell culture (including sterile) techniques. Experience of working with samples such as human blood and DNA, knowledge of genetics and inherited rare (monogenic) diseases, excellent time management, and the ability to work to strict objectives are essential. While a mix of laboratory and informatics experience is desirable, training and support in one of these areas is available to motivated and otherwise outstanding candidates. This post may therefore be of interest to clinical scientists and experienced post-doctoral researchers who would like to expand their range of skills in a research setting.

The post is available from 1st January 2021 and is funded by a grant from the MRC for 18 months in the first instance with possibility of extension to May 2024. Appointment will be on UCL Grade 7 with starting salary in the range £36,028 - £43,533 per annum (including London Allowance), superannuable. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £31,542 - £33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

You should apply for this post through UCL’s online recruitment website, www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs, where you can download a full job description and person specification using ref 1874049.
