Job purpose
The purpose of the Research Scientist I position is to identify variability within biological and genetic/epigenetic factors potentially linked to differences in vulnerability to Gulf War-related exposures. Work involves high throughput sequencing data analyses to elucidate epigenetic signature tags associated with disease susceptibility.
Areas of Responsibility
Candidates must have a strong background in: cell biology, cell culture studies, molecular biology, experience analyzing next generation RNA and DNA sequencing data, knowledge of statistical methods, bioinformatics concepts/methods, genomic data tools and databases are beneficial.
• Position requires performing various duties including high-throughput sample preparation
• Performing basic molecular cell biology experiments (i.e. western blot analysis, ELISA, cell culture)
• Planning and conducting experiments
• Recording and analyzing data
• Presenting results to senior/other research staff
• Expected to design experiments, analyze and interpret data, and compile data into presentations and manuscripts
• Preparing and writing research protocols, papers, reports, reviews, and summaries
• Supervising junior staff including research assistants and technicians
• Ensuring that quality standards are met
• Keeping up-to-date with relevant scientific and technical developments
• Contribute to the submission of research proposals and contracts to funding agencies
• Train, mentor and supervise experimental laboratory staff with techniques and experimental procedures, and lead the development of new procedures and protocols
Qualifications
• PhD degree in Biostatistics, Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline.
• Candidates with expertise or familiarity with statistical methodologies, computational genetics, statistical genetics, and bioinformatics are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Highly motivated individuals with intense interest in science and enthusiasm to understand the genetic complexities of multi-symptom diseases will be considered for this position
• The applicant should have experience with molecular biology techniques, as well as common methods in the field of genetics/epigenetics
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good self-organizational and presentation skills
• Excellent inter-personal skills
• Ability to interact with individuals with varying levels of experience and background while working closely with colleagues, students, and research assistants
• Ability to demonstrate technical communication skills
• Background and laboratory training in molecular biology epigenetic research and mitochondrial biology
• Demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills
• Capable of working in a team environment with an interdisciplinary focus and with an emphasis on transnational medicine
• Creativity, independence, and self-motivation, with good communication skills
Physical requirements
• Must be able to lift 40lbs as needed
