011950 - Research Scientist (Novel disruptive protein degrading technology), UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science (Temporary 12 month role)

Applications are invited for a Research Scientist (Novel disruptive protein degrading technology) post within UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science.

An exciting Postdoctoral Research Scientist position funded by Enterprise Ireland is now available at University College Dublin, UCD. The successful researcher will work on a patent filed technology, developed in UCD in the group of the leading Prion expert in Ireland (Dr. Hilary McMahon). The technology destroys the most difficult to degrade protein, the prion, under mild conditions. The prion, which sticks like glue to surgical equipment, is the agent of vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), a devastating fatal disease, which originated from infection with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) infected products. CJD hospital transmission from surgical equipment is a concern. A UK study estimated that 1 in 2000 persons are asymptomatic carriers of vCJD, which equates to 33,000 carriers in the UK alone. This is a global issue as exposure incidents have already occurred in many countries. Standard cleaning practises used by the hospital sector cannot remove the prion from surgical equipment. The technology being developed here has the potential to mitigate this risk.

The technology is enzyme based and it provides the platform of a powerful low temperature decontamination tool, and this has very significant potential to form the basis of a spin out company. The post advertised here is for a motivated postdoctoral research scientist who will take a lead role in this technology development. The role will involve research development of the scale up of recombinant microbial enzyme production and technology and concept development geared towards prion destruction. The contract currently on offer is the first 12-month phase in a 3-year projected programme enabling the development and commercialisation of a ground-breaking disruptive solution with real world impact.
    Salary Range: €34,000 - €44,000 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience, and in line with UCD HR salary regulations.
