Post-doc position - Dynamic metabolic models of biopharmaceutical production process using CHO cells

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. There are a total of 12,400 full year students at first and second levels, almost 1,900 active (at least 50 per cent) research students and 5,100 employees.
The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) is one of KTH’s five schools, which profile spans the broader domains of health, environment, materials and energy. The CBH School's research and education have great potential for addressing global societal challenges such as sustainable energy, health and aging populations, a sustainable working life, food production, climate change, sustainable production and clean water.
The School consists of nine departments and over 850 co-workers. It is represented in four strategically important locations in the Stockholm area – centrally at Campus Valhallavägen, at Alba Nova University Center close to physics departments at both Stockholm University and KTH, in the medical technology hub Campus Flemingsberg, and at the national research center SciLifeLab and the Karolinska Institute in Solna.

    Job description

A new project funded by the European Commission within the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI2) program is starting early 2018, with acronym iConsensus and title "Integrated control and sensing platform for biopharmaceutical cultivation process high-throughput development and production". The project is coordinated by KTH and includes four academia, eight European SME's and seven end-users from the pharmaceutical industry including among others several of the largest global companies.
The group of Cell Technology (CETEG) in the Dept. Industrial Biotechnology/Bioprocess Design, CBH School, KTH, who will be Coordinator of the project, has a strong experience in the development of biopharmaceutical drug bioprocesses for human therapy. CETEG's activities include bioprocessing of high cell density perfusion, dynamic metabolic modelling and fed-batch process development for biopharmaceutical manufacturing based on mammalian cells, as well as human cell culture. CETEG is directing the Competence Centre AdBIOPRO for Advanced Bioproduction by Continuous Processing. It is also partner of the Wallenberg Centre for Protein Research (WCPR) and of the Centre for Advanced Medical Product (CAMP).

A post-doc position within the EU-funded project iConsensus is available at CETEG. The focus will be the development of dynamic metabolic models for production processes of biopharmaceuticals using CHO cells, as well as interacting with- and supporting the teams of the Consortium for the development of the new real-time analytical methods of the project. The practical work will be performed at KTH, AlbaNova Centre, Roslagstullsbacken 21, 10691 Stockholm.

    Qualifications

A qualified candidate will be an engineer holding a PhD degree in biotechnology, bioprocessing, automatic control or equivalent. Experiences of mathematical modelling and of bioprocesses of mammalian cell culture are strong advantages. Knowledge and experience of spectroscopic methods such as infrared-based, fluorescence, etc., are meriting. The candidate should be highly motivated for doing scientific research, should be able to work independently, should have well developed analytical and problem solving skills and enjoy team working. Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English, communication skills, technical mindset and laboratory skills are required for the position.

Form of employment: Time-limited – one year, renewable one year
