    Postdoctoral Scientists x 3 – Neurobiology
Starting Salary £30,464 to £33,305 per annum
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge UK

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is a world leader in biological research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health and disease. It provides an unsurpassed environment for both young and established researchers. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.

We are looking for 3 Postdoctoral Scientists to join Dr Anne Bertolotti’s pioneering research programme, which focuses on innovative approaches to rescue cells from protein misfolding, a condition at the origin of many human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases. One of such approaches consist in selective inhibition of phosphatases, an important discovery because phosphatases were thought to be undruggable before this work (see Tsaytler et al., 2011, Science, 332, 91-4; and Das et al., 2015, Science, 348, 239-242, Carrara, M., Sigurdardottir, A., & Bertolotti, A. (2017). Nat Struct Mol Biol, 24(9), 708–716).

Dr Anne Bertolotti’s cutting-edge work has gained international recognition and she is the recipient of a prestigious Wellcome Trust Investigator Award, to continue this innovative and transformative research.

You will join a strong inter-disciplinary team at the LMB which has broad expertise extending from biochemistry, structural, chemical, molecular and cell biology through to transgenic animals models of degenerative diseases. We also have an excellent record of innovative basic research leading to applications in medicine.

You will make a significant contribution to a project aimed at capitalizing on our pioneering discoveries on phosphatases. One project will be for a cell biologist with expertise in protein-protein interactions. A second project will be for a cell/molecular biologist interested studying translation regulation using unbiased approaches such as ribosome profiling or polysome profiling and RNAseq. A third project is for a biochemist/biophysicist/structural biologist interested in biochemical and structural studies of phosphatases.

Available projects focus on phosphatases and range from biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and cell biology. Further information about the position may be obtained from Dr Anne Bertolotti– email: [email protected]

You will be ambitious, creative and fearless. You will have a PhD molecular or cell biology or biochemistry/biophysics/structural biology or due to complete doctoral studies within 6 months of applying. Relevant experience is required and this must be best attested by at least one impactful publication. Experience with protein-protein interaction in desirable. Experience with ribosome or polysome profiling and RNA seq is desirable. Experience with biochemistry, structural biology is desirable. An interest in chemical biology, signaling and/or stress responses/protein quality control is desirable.

You will enjoy interacting with a dynamic interdisciplinary team sharing a passion for science and a commitment to explore the unknown.

The successful candidate will be awarded a three-year MRC Career Development Fellowship/MRC Postdoctoral Training Scheme, which is a training and development position for a postdoctoral scientist who has recently completed doctoral studies or is moving into a new research discipline. Your salary is supported by 30 days’ annual leave entitlement, an optional MRC final salary pension scheme and excellent on site sports and social facilities.

Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement. You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
