    RCUK Innovation Fellowships

Clinical and Non-Clinical Research Training Programme in Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacology

Medical Research Council -Toxicology Unit, Leicester
Fixed Term up to 31st March 2021
    Salary: MRC Band 4 £30,162 – £38,545
    MRC Band 3 £37,395 - £50,517*
Registered clinicians will receive a clinical allowance according to experience (ranging from £1,883 to £14,341)

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new Post-Doctoral Fellowship Training Programme suitable for scientists looking for an opportunity to broaden experience and develop cross-disciplinary skills. Six clinical/non-clinical Fellowships are available on this unique, collaborative research training programme, which will provide novel training and research opportunities in fundamental mechanistic toxicology, exposure modelling, exposomics and clinical pharmacology/drug safety.

The programme will be jointly administered by three establishments (two Fellows based at each Centre), these will be the MRC Toxicology Unit (MRC-TU Leicester), the MRC Centre for Drug Safety Science (MRC-CDSS, University of Liverpool) and the MRC-Public Health England (PHE) Centre for Environment & Health (MRC-PHE CEH, Imperial College and King’s College London). The scheme brings together combined scientific expertise of staff from the participating Institutions in toxicological, environmental and pharmacology to provide an exciting new framework for research, training and interaction with industry. Each Fellowship will be allocated to a host institution. Projects will be joint between two of the three Centre’s with approximately 3-6 months being spent at the partner Centre, this will ensure that Fellows benefit from the varied working environments and facilities on offer to enable the acquisition of a wide-ranging applied skills set.

On completion of a Fellowship, individuals will be highly competitive to apply for Senior Fellowships and establish independent research programmes.

Examples of possible projects include studies into toxicities associated with i) nanofibre (e.g. carbon nanotube) exposure (MRC-TU, CEH-PHE), ii) pathways that link sodium excretion, blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (CEH-PHE, MRC-TU), iii) immune check-point inhibitors (CDSS, MRC-TU), iv) alcohol liver disease (CEH-CDSS).

The MRC Toxicology Unit is now inviting applications for two Fellowships to this programme. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with considerable experience of innovative molecular research. You must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and have published in a peer reviewed journal. Experience of molecular toxicology/pharmacology would be a distinct advantage.

Please note the Toxicology Unit, located at the University of Leicester, is currently in the process of transferring to the University of Cambridge. Legal transfer will take place in March 2018; the physical relocation is expected to take place in early 2020.

Applications should include a CV; contact details of two referees and a one-page proposal describing your research interests.

*Appointment to MRC Band 3 requires significant relevant postdoctoral experience and evidence of a trajectory towards independence, including an excellent publication record.

Funding is immediately available for these positions and applicants must be able to start employment as soon as possible.
