Postdoctoral Research Assistant

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in the group of Dr Benjamin Stieglitz to work on the structural and functional characterisation of ubiquitin ligases.

Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and it was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). All Post-doctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

This particular research position will focus on the characterisation of the molecular mechanism by which bacterial E3 ligases subvert the eukaryotic ubiquitylation machinery. The understanding will elucidate how Gram-negative bacteria target proteins in man, how this modification undermines the response of the host ubiquitin system and may provide new routes for the intervention of the bacterial attack.

The ideal candidate for this position should have a PhD in structural biology, biochemistry or related field and have an interest/knowledge in the ubiquitin system. Experience in protein expression and purification, X-ray crystallography and biophysical techniques such as fluorescence spectroscopy or isothermal titration calorimetry would be desirable. A track record of peer-reviewed publications is essential.

This is a BBSRC funded full-time position, available for a period of 3 years. The start date is 1st October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary is £32,956 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a defined benefits pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
