Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 in the UCD School of Medicine.
Chronic lung diseases including emphysema, account for over 20% of deaths in Ireland, the highest rate in Western Europe. The precise mechanisms associated with progression of emphysema are not known, however it is now thought to start with the loss of blood vessels in the lung. Erythropoietin (Epo) has recently been shown to stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in several other organs suggesting that this might also occur in the lung. Concurrent treatment with Epo prevented the development of emphysema in rodents, therefore we propose to investigate whether Epo can restore new vessels and tissue in adult lungs, and whether this could be developed to potentially treat debilitating diseases such as emphysema. This proposed project will investigate this hypothesis using transgenic animal models, Epo mimetic drug testing and primary cell-culture models taken from human subjects with emphysema and other related lung diseases.
