Pelagic Biogeochemist (Fixed Term, Full Time)

About the role:
We are seeking a Pelagic Biogeochemist to deliver new insight into the role of zooplankton in ocean biogeochemistry. You will help determine how the abundance and structure of marine zooplankton communities relate to the functioning of the ecosystems within which they reside. Ship-board incubation experiments will be conducted to determine key physiological rates and how these vary in relation to feeding conditions. Additional experiments will examine if, how and why zooplankton fragment sinking particles of organic matter. State-of-the-art analytical techniques (e.g. compound-specific stable isotope analyses, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, lipid analyses) will be used to investigate how and why the physiological ecology of zooplankton varies throughout the ocean.
This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for 34 months offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.
Salary:
This is a Band 6 position and the starting salary will be £28,200 per annum and depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.
Hours of Work:
The hours of working are full time, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. As part of this role, you will be expected to work at sea.
About you:
You will be responsible for planning and conducting a range of zooplankton incubation experiments and will contribute to major, vertically-resolved zooplankton sampling campaigns around South Georgia and in the Benguela upwelling system. Additional work will be conducted in the Arctic Ocean. You will be expected to take a leading role in the biochemical analysis of sampled materials and will be required to actively participate in project-wide meetings and frequently communicate your results with your line manager. You will also be responsible for data analysis and the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
