The Centre for Catalysis Research at the University of Cape Town invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for research in the area of catalysis and, more specifically, reactor design for fuel processing in the fuel to hydrogen programme of its HySA/Catalysis Competence Centre.

The research is intended to develop industry-class know-how in specific aspects of fuel processor reactor design and demonstration with emphasis on the design for local manufacturing, efficient heat integration and laboratory demonstration of prototype LPG fuel processors. The successful candidate will be encouraged to conduct his/her own self-initiated research during the tenure of the Fellowship, supervised by Prof. Jack Fletcher, and consistent with the goals of the fuel to hydrogen team led by the Key Technology Specialist in this field, Mr Niels Luchters.

The Fellowship is valued at R300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Rand) per annum. No benefits are attached to the Fellowship and no service is required in return for the award. The fellowship is compliant with the SARS policies/rules and is therefore exempt from taxation

The tenure of the Fellowship is ONE year, renewable for up to a further one year, contingent on satisfactory academic progress and on the availability of funds. The successful candidate will be expected to commence the fellowship as soon as possible.

    Conditions of Award:
    • Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering or related engineering fields, (granted within the past 5 years or the candidate must provide satisfactory evidence that the PhD thesis has been submitted for examination) within the field of heterogeneous catalysis and fuel to hydrogen,
    • The applicant must have experience in fuel processor designs and operation,
    • The applicant must not have previously held any permanent professional or academic positions,
    • As part of the successful candidate’s professional development, limited supervision of postgraduate students may be required,
    • The successful incumbent must be prepared to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices of the postdoctoral sector. The fellow must not be registered for any degree studies while he/she holds the fellowship.

    Application Procedure:
Applicants should submit the following documents:
    • A letter of application, in which the applicant’s research interests are outlined, and in which evidence of the required experience is provided,
    • All academic transcripts (no certificates),
    • A CV including details of all publications (journal and conference),
    • Letters of reference from two senior research staff/academics who have supervised/taught the applicant.
Only eligible and complete applications will be considered. Complete applications must be submitted to Niels Luchters by email to [email protected], no later than 13 December 2016.

The University of Cape Town reserves the right to disqualify ineligible, incomplete and/or inappropriate applications, to change the conditions of award or to make no awards at all.
