    Research Associate in Biophysics

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

The successful candidate will join Dr Volpe’s research group in the Department of Chemistry at the Bloomsbury Campus of University College London. This position is available to work in the fields of biophysics and active matter. The project aims at understanding how the motility, collective behaviour and social behaviour (i.e. quorum sensing) of motile bacteria is regulated in scenarios that mimic real host environments in the presence of spatial patchiness and crowding. The project will further aim to test the effect of the environment on several quorum-sensing related phenomena of biomedical relevance, including biofilm formation and development. This project will involve collaboration with microbiologists .

The postholder will be required to carry out research into the individual and collective behaviour of motile bacteria in microfabricated environments using a novel combination of methods from advanced optical microscopy, microfabrication and molecular biology. Expertise in microbiology and/or molecular biology is also desirable.

We require an experimental biophysicist with experience in active matter systems, optical microscopy and microfabrication The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in Physics, Biophysics or a relevant subject area (or be about to be awarded a PhD), and possess experience in the following areas: soft matter, optical microscopy and microfabrication. Expertise in programming, microbiology and/or molecular biology is also desirable. In addition, the appointee will give evidence of having successfully published in prestigious journals, and conferences.
Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £29,809 - £31,432 per annum, including London Allowance of £2,980 p.a.) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
