The Ethier lab at Georgia Tech/Emory Biomedical Engineering seeks two postdoctoral fellows in the area of ocular biomechanics.
The first position is NASA–funded, and involves biomechanical modeling of ocular structures involved in VIIP syndrome (

Specific duties include: extracting relevant information from clinical images; integrating an ocular biomechanical model with a whole-body fluid shift model being developed at NASA; analyzing experimental and numerical results; writing papers; and assisting with grant preparation. The anticipated start date is February 2017, for a duration of three years. Applicants should have: a PhD in biomechanics or closely related field; experience with medical image processing; experience with finite element modeling of connective tissue biomechanics; experience with construction of complex geometric models for finite element modeling; experience with tissue constitutive relationships. Interest and willingness to participate in an interdisciplinary research team is essential.
The second position will use the BXD mouse set to identify genes that associate with scleral biomechanical properties, an important risk factor in glaucoma. Specific duties will include making high-resolution measurements of ocular compliance in mouse eyes from different mouse strains; analyzing experimental results; working closely with collaborators at Emory University to carry out bioinformatics analysis of gene loci associations; development of one or more mice with altered gene function to explore the impact on glaucomatous damage; writing papers; and assisting with grant preparation. The start date is as soon as possible, with anticipated duration of 2 years. Applicants should have: a PhD in biomechanics, ocular physiology or ocular genetics; experience with use of mice for scientific studies; and strong quantitative and computer skills. Interest and willingness to participate in an interdisciplinary research team is essential.
