Postdoctoral student in Medical Imaging

At Linköping University we embrace innovative thinking. Constantly challenging ourselves has been our strongest motivator ever since we opened our doors in 1975. We are driven by seeking answers beyond the traditional and across subject boundaries. If you are too, we would like to see you at our university. Together we can find solutions to the challenges of the day.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a national centre for education and research in biomedical engineering. Our work is guided by the needs of the healthcare sector and is carried out in close collaboration with hospital clinics and the biomedical industry.

Our aim is to be a catalyst in the biomedical engineering innovation system of the future - an arena for leading international researchers and teachers, where new knowledge is created and disseminated. By integrating biomedical research, healthcare and the business sector, we help improve people’s quality of life worldwide. Read more at www.liu.se/imt

    LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
    Hereby advertises a position as
Postdoc in Medical Imaging, with a focus on brain tissue analysis
formally based at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Informatics

The position will also be affiliated to the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV). CMIV is a Swedish multidisciplinary research center hosted by Linköping University and the County Council of Östergötland. CMIV conducts focused front-line research within multidisciplinary projects providing solutions to tomorrow’s clinical issues. The mission is to develop future methods and tools for image analysis and visualization for applications within health care and medical research. The advertised position will be part of the newly funded interdisciplinary research project "Seeing Organ Function - Patient Specific Image Data Driven Organ Exploration and Simulation".

    Duties
As a postdoctoral student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a postdoctoral student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time. Since the origin of medical imaging, its major focus has been the understanding of anatomical structures. Only more recently medical imaging modalities support acquisition of patient-specific functional data embedded in a high-resolution spatial context. The project "Seeing Organ Function", funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, aims at developing methods for the creation of image-driven patient specific organ models for exploratory simulation of organ function that support medical research, and in the long-term clinical use of patient specific functional organ models in the diagnostic work-flow. The medical informatics group activity in the project involves development of dedicated image analysis techniques to extract brain tissue micro structure information using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in general and diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) in particular. New techniques will be developed to analyse dMRI data aiming at identification of nerve tracts and other critical structures in the brain. Recent promising developments in diffusion imaging, such as Double Pulsed Field Gradient (dPFG) imaging and high dimensional approaches, will be of central importance.

    Qualifications
The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application.

Good knowledge in calculus, linear algebra, statistics and multidimensional signal processing is required. Previous experience from medical imaging is a merit.

    Appointment time
A Postdoctor is appointed until further notice, but for no longer than two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.

    Starting date
    By agreement.

    Salary
The University applies individual salary scales adapted to the experience of the employee and to the labour market.
