    The Faculty of Science of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Life Cycle Assessment.

    The Faculty has been awarded funding to support research into the valorization of waste tyres.

    A Fellowship for research into life cycle assessments of the manufacture of rubber and tyre products, their use, disposal, recycling and re-use has been made available.

    The value of the Fellowship is R250000 (approx. $24 000). The Fellowship is tenable for one year, renewable for a further two years is available upon satisfactory progress.

    After nine months of the Fellowship, on application, the Fellow may, upon evidence of satisfactory progress, be granted an additional R25000 in support of a presentation at an international conference.

    The fellow may, on application, be granted an additional R20000 in support of relocation costs to South Africa.

    The successful fellow will work with Assoc. Prof. Chris Woolard and other staff in the Faculty of Science. The research activities should tackle research into the life cycle assessments of tyre production, distribution, use, disposal, re-use and recycling. A particular emphasis will be placed on life cycle assessments of tyre crumbing, recycling and reclaiming operations.

    i. The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for experiential learning in life cycle assessment research.
    ii. The Fellowship is available to individuals who have achieved the doctoral degree within the past 5 years. Applicants may not have held full-time or academic posts since achieving their PhD.
    iii. Applicants should have experience in techno-economic analysis, life cycle analysis and or environmental process modelling. Experience in life cycle analysis of the use and disposal of waste materiasl will be an advantage.
    iv. The successful incumbent will be required to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postdoctoral sector.

    iv) names and contact details of at least two (2) academic staff who have taught, supervised or worked with the applicant.
