Postdoctoral Associate in Genomics (Computational)

We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral scientist to join our growing team in the Yale Center of Genomic Health and Department of Genetics; the Lake Lab. Our lab uses computational and experimental methods to improve our understanding of how genetic variation in our mitochondria underlie health and disease. We are especially interested in building new knowledge and tools to advance our understanding of how mitochondrial genome variation impacts biological processes and disease risk, across rare and common phenotypes. The lab also prioritizes translating our research into practical tools that benefit research and clinical communities.

We are looking for a postdoc to spearhead computational projects that will develop and apply cutting-edge approaches for analyzing genetic variants in mitochondrial, and nuclear genomes, and their role in disease. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The start date can be flexible, and as soon as summer 2024.

The lab is located in the Yale School of Medicine which offers an outstanding training environment for postdoctoral scientists, with state-of-the-art research facilities and vast resources to support professional development. For more information about our lab, past publications and our research please see our website: https://www.thelakelab.org/

    • Use bioinformatic tools to analyze large-scale genomics datasets
    • Develop and apply innovative methods for analyzing and classifying genetic variation
    • Prepare high-impact manuscripts for publication and conference presentations
    • Attend and present at lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars
    • Contribute to the mentoring of students and junior scientists in the lab
    • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals

Mentorship will be provided for fellowship applications, manuscript writing, presentations, and skills for independence.

The successful candidate will gain access to a range of career development opportunities at Yale. This includes seminars from internationally renowned researchers and ‘Meet the Speaker’ lunches, and professional development and networking activities via the Yale Postdoctoral Association, Yale Office for Career Strategy, and other offices at Yale.

    Qualifications
Candidates should have or be close to obtaining a PhD in either genetics, genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field.

Experience with programming languages (such as Python and R) and the command line interface is required. Experience with one or more of the following is desired: large-scale genomic analyses, variant calling, high performance computing, cloud computing, machine learning methods, and or statistical genetics.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:
    • A high level of drive and initiative, and track record of impactful research outcomes
    • Experience writing manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Eagerness to learn and establish new methods, and good problem-solving skills
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Desire to contribute to the mentorship of students and junior scientists in the lab
    • Experience in, or strong understanding of, human genetics research.

    Position Information
This is a full-time, in-person position at Yale in the vibrant city of New Haven, Connecticut, with a competitive salary from $68,000 a year and access to a range of benefits.
