Post Doctoral Fellow Level 1 – Bioprocessing (Ref: 1025)



    Basic Function:

    The Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority is seeking to fill a contract position at Teagasc Food Research Centre Ashtown for a post-doctoral researcher. The successful candidate will be involved valorisation of agri-food side streams and conversion into high value ingredients (e.g. phenolics, proteins and other bioactives of interest). The primary role of the candidate is to develop a range of processing technologies for stablisation, processing, conversion and separation systems. Prior experience in chemical characterisation of such ingredients and end use will be a distinct advantage. The candidate will work in tandem with the research and industry partners within the Horizon Europe consortium comprising of Norway, France, Poland, Romania and Ireland in meeting the deliverables of the project

    Background:

    UP4Food (Upcycling side-streams for sustainable and healthy ingredients and new food concepts) is a new European co-funded project. The objective of the project is to improve food resource utilization by using a system approach to upcycle processing side-streams from three selected value chains in Europe (potatoes, oil seeds and pelagic fish). This will support the EU’s long-term commitment to address economic, environmental and societal challenges whilst developing fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food systems and other consumer goods from primary production to tangible end products. Teagasc is a diverse and inclusive organisation with several research centres located around Ireland. The main objective of the PCFC at Ashtown is to support the agri-food sector with innovative solutions that promotes both the economic and environmental sustainability of the Irish agri-food sector. The position will suit a scientist in a dynamic environment who has an interest in mission oriented research of relevance to economic development. The successful candidate will play a key role in a recently funded project on innovative approaches for valorisation of side-streams to develop sustainable foods and value chains. The applicant must have a background in food processing, bioprocessing, biochemical/chemical engineering with proven experience in process development and scale up processes. The successful candidate will be based at the National Prepared Consumer Food Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15. The successful candidate will be a part of large team to ensure deliverables are met and disseminate the research outcomes to scientific community, agri-food industry stakeholders, government and other state agencies.

    Background to Teagasc Post-Doctoral Programme:

    The Teagasc post-doctoral programme provides training and development opportunities for early career scientists that enhances their experience of learning and equips them with the necessary skills for the next stage of their chosen career in research. Appointees to a Teagasc Post-Doctoral Fellowship will be required to undertake a Level 9 Professional Diploma in Researcher Development delivered by University College Dublin (UCD).

    This professional diploma is a flexible, modular programme which embraces a blended learning approach to align with the Post-Doctoral Fellow's role in Teagasc. It is designed to develop competencies and transferable skills in research, professionalism, communication and career development. The majority of the programme is delivered online with the remaining elements delivered in-person at Teagasc locations. This blended approach affords the Post-Doctoral Fellow the opportunity to meet and network with other Teagasc colleagues. During the course of the diploma Post-Doctoral Fellows will have access to a full range of supports including the UCD library, writing centre and careers centre.

    This is a research focused training role, the primary purpose of which is to provide early career scientists with the opportunity to develop their research skills and competencies.

    The Post-Doctoral Fellow will, while working in conjunction with senior research staff, gain insight and experience into a variety of areas including the processes of project and budgetary management, publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals, writing grant applications, and attracting external funding; the development of active collaboration with relevant national and international research communities; the development of communication and presentation skills, leadership and management skills, and overall career development.

    Modules will be conducted under the supervision and direction of Dr. Brijesh Tiwari or other designated manager in conjunction with the Head of Department.
