Basic Function:
The successful candidate will undertake and disseminate the research findings of the externally funded Dairy4Beef project with the objective of optimising the national breeding programme for efficient and quality beef from dairy herds. The research scientist will be responsible for the conduction of genetic and genomic analysis, as well as, designing the optimal breeding scheme to produce genetically elite beef sires for the dairy herd. Other responsibilities will include the dissemination of the research to national and international stakeholders.
Background:
The Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre Moorepark is Ireland’s leading dairy research institute on grass based production systems. It has national responsibility for all aspects of dairy production research including grassland and grazing management, breeding, health, nutrition and economic modelling. We are seeking to recruit a post-doctoral research scientist to work as part of the dynamic cattle research team. The candidate will form part of a DAFM funded Research Stimulus project on the optimization of a breeding programme for efficient and quality beef from dairy herds. The dairy breeding team have strong collaborative links to ICBF and relevant industry partners and the successful candidate will benefit from further development of these links.
Background to Teagasc Post-Doctoral Programme:
The Teagasc post-doctoral programme provides training and development opportunities for early career scientists that enhances their experience of learning and equips them with the necessary skills for the next stage of their chosen career in research.
This is a research focused training role, the primary purpose of which is to provide early career scientists with the opportunity to develop their research skills and competencies.
The post-doctoral Fellow will, while working in conjunction with senior research staff, gain insight and experience into a variety of areas including the processes of project and budgetary management, the development of active collaboration with relevant national and international research communities, publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals, the development of communication skills, leadership and management skills, overall career development, with possible experience in the mentorship of students.
Modules will be conducted under the supervision and direction of the appointed lead researcher in conjunction with the Head of Department.
