    Job description
We investigate pathogenetic principles in autoimmune diseases caused by aberrant activation of nucleic acid sensors. lnnate immune detection of viral infection relies an sensing of viral DNA or RNA by specialized pattern recognition receptors that trigger antiviral type I IFN and NF-kB responses. While acute activation of antiviral immunity is essential for defense, chronic activation of the same pathways can cause a breakdown of Tand B cell self-tolerance and Lead to devastating autoimmunity, as for example in Systemic Lupus and many related conditions. In the setting of Collaborative Research Center 237, we address molecular mechanisms of inappropriate activation and regulation of innate antiviral immunity using cell culture, mause models and human samples. Spontaneous activation of nucleic acid sensors by endogenous DNA or RNA is also relevant in tumor cells and is emerging as an important determinant of antitumor immunity.
