Postdoctoral Scientist - Structural Studies
Salary Range £32,302 to £35,143 per annum
Fixed term, 2 years
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is a research institute within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is an entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at
www.ukri.org.
We are looking for a computational postdoctoral scientist to join the group of Prof Julian Gough to work on the application of novel methods to analyse large scale genomics data, including exome, full genome and SNP arrays. We have created an innovative new reverse approach to analysing human genome variant data (in press) and wish to apply it to numerous cohorts and datasets such as UKBiobank, Genomics England, and other disease-specific cohorts, including our own direct-to-consumer (DTC) cohort (
https://supfam.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/SUPERFAMILY/23andMe).
This position will have the responsibility for running our novel computational method alongside standard genomics analysis packages and techniques to make new biological discoveries from genetic data. There is the potential to innovate and develop new approaches or additions to our methods. The scientific interpretation of the output of the methods is crucial, and we aim to discover new genes and mechanisms that are experimentally verifiable by collaborators or industry partners. We anticipate that some of these will have translational potential for drug targets, diagnostics and patient stratification for trials or precision medicine.
You are highly motivated, have a PhD in a relevant biological or computational subject, e.g. bioinformatics, computer science, genetics or are due to complete within 3 months. You will have the ability to program, analyse data, learn new software tools, make analysis pipelines, and most important of all, carry out scientific interpretation and literature search based on the results. The project may include collaborating with industrial partners on the downstream translation of the research that we will carry out at the LMB, for medical use and commercialisation.
The successful applicant will be awarded a 2-year Career Development Fellowship/ Postdoctoral Training Scheme position. This is a training and development position for a Postdoctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills. The MRC LMB has excellent scientific core facilities and training opportunities.
Working for UKRI MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a defined benefit pension scheme, excellent holiday entitlement (40 ½ days including bank holidays and privilege days) and Benenden Healthcare membership. You will also have access to employee shopping/ travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as a salary sacrifice scheme for cycle to work.
Informal enquires may be made to Julian Gough at;
[email protected] Please be aware that two position options are being advertised and only one will be appointed to.
This role qualifies for endorsement by UKRI for a UK Global Talent Visa, for which the successful applicant is likely to be eligible to apply. Immigration costs (visa and health surcharge) can be reclaimed from UKRI after taking up the post (terms and conditions apply).
Closing date: Monday 22nd August 2022
Final appointments will be subject to a pre-employment screening.
