Applications are invited for a Temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (in the field of engineering geophysics) within UCD School of Civil Engineering
We wish to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the field of Engineering Geophysics. The successful candidate will work on the GEOTECS project “Geophysical and Earth Observation Tools for Evaluating the Condition of Slopes”. This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, Geological Survey of Ireland and the Environmental Protection Agency under the SFI Frontiers for the Future Programme. Recent research has demonstrated the potential benefits of geophysical techniques for non-invasively characterising the heterogeneity and internal condition of geotechnical infrastructure slopes. In particular, this project will investigate the use of seismic geophysical properties as proxies for the representation of key geotechnical properties, in order to support preventative slope maintenance practices. The overall aim of the project, which will have both field and laboratory components, is to develop a robust geophysical means of characterising the temporal and spatial condition of geotechnical infrastructure slopes (e.g. embankments/cuttings/flood defences). This will involve the development of an approach, using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) of fibre-optic cables, to enable near surface seismic monitoring of these slopes.
This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.
In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:
• to conduct a literature review / evaluation of existing data in the subject area,
• to conduct a laboratory testing programme to develop geophysical-geotechnical property relationships for the soils under investigation
• to support a field seismic geophysical monitoring programme, using DAS and conventional approaches, at a number of test slopes,
• to process and analyse the resultant geophysical and geotechnical data.
PD 1 Salary Scale: €39,522 - €41,940 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 15th August 2022
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
