An exciting postdoctoral opportunity is available for outstanding applicants with experience in analysing next-generation sequencing data. You will be based at the Epilepsy Research Group at the University of Otago, Wellington, where you will manage epilepsy genetic bioinformatics research projects focusing on the analysis of next-generation sequencing data from family and cohort studies.
The Epilepsy Research Group is a high-calibre national epilepsy genetics project with over 1200 individuals participating from around New Zealand. The group has strong ties with world-leading scientists in Melbourne at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) and the Epilepsy Research Centre, University of Melbourne. The project will be primarily supervised by Associate Professor Lynette Sadleir with Professor Melanie Bahlo at the WEHI. You will have an affiliation with the WEHI as a visiting scientist to the institute and will travel to Melbourne at least twice a year. The bioinformatics analysis will be performed using established analysis pipelines at the WEHI and accessed remotely while in Wellington.
Key Tasks:
• Appropriate analysis of data using next-generation sequencing analysis tools.
• Maintenance and development of data analysis pipelines.
• Understanding and interpretation of techniques and results.
• Management of a portfolio of epilepsy projects.
• Understanding of epilepsy genetics.
• Maintain good working relationships with Epilepsy Research Group staff and our research collaborators.
• Summarising and reporting key results to collaborators.
• Present research results at meetings.
• Writing manuscripts reporting the results.
• Contribute to the Epilepsy Research Group and Bahlo lab meeting schedule by giving meeting talks (2-3 times pa).
• Present work at conferences.
• Attendance at Epilepsy Collaborative Group Retreats (twice pa).
• Contribute to Grant Funding applications.
Knowledge and skills:
A PhD in a quantitative discipline such as computational biology, statistics, mathematics, computer science is required, as well as experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data and a good understanding of genetics. Experience with family studies is also highly desirable. The successful candidate will have experience in Perl (and/or Python), R programming and post analysis interpretation, as well as report writing and discussion of research results.
This is a full-time position fixed-term for two years.
