The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.
Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FMedSci, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally.
The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.
The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit, within the Division of Cancer Therapeutics, is a multidisciplinary 'bench to bedside' centre, dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Our exciting goal is to discover high quality drug candidates for validated biological targets and to progress these candidate compounds to clinical trial. Our chemists work alongside world-class biologists and drug metabolism specialists focusing on new molecular targets emerging from human genome and ground breaking cell biology research.

Two postdoctoral positions in synthetic organic chemistry applied to the discovery and optimisation of new drugs to treat cancer are now available in a collaborative project led by Dr Swen Hoelder. The successful candidates will be located in well-equipped laboratories in Sutton, South London and will apply their synthetic organic chemistry knowledge to prepare molecules of interest as anticancer agents. In addition, the successful candidates are expected to learn and develop skills in medicinal chemistry, as well as a broader understanding of drug discovery.

Knowledge, experience and achievement in synthetic chemistry are essential. The successful applicants will have ample opportunity to develop additional skills in post. This is an ideal opportunity for enthusiastic, committed chemists to make an important contribution to improved therapies for cancer patients, while gaining experience and training in drug discovery skills in an institute with a track record of success. Starting salary will be in the range of £34,247 to £36,247 p.a. inclusive (based on previous experience). Appointments will be for 1 year in the first instance, with possible extension subject to meeting project milestones. Candidates must be available to start by end of March 2017.
