Associate Research Fellow - Evolving controllers and controlling evolution

The starting salary will be from £24,370 up to £27,428 on Grade E, depending on qualifications and experience.

The School wishes to recruit Postdoctoral Researchers for a collaborative project between the labs of Dr. Orkun S. Soyer, Dr. Ozgur Akman and Prof. Declan Bates. This EPSRC funded post is available from 1st June 2011 for a period of 30 months. The successful applicant will contribute towards research related to the project entitled ‘Evolving controllers and controlling evolution’.

In this project, we will combine tools and ideas from the fields of control theory and evolutionary theory to study specific molecular systems in order to derive evolutionary design principles underlying their robustness. In particular, we are interested in understanding which evolutionary conditions can result in the emergence of robustness in these systems and through what kinds of molecular or network-level mechanisms it is underpinned. We will then combine this evolutionary insight with in silico evolution approaches to design robust synthetic systems and engineering applications, in particular in aerospace control engineering.

We expect to hire motivated researchers that will work closely together on these two interconnected themes and also interact with experimental bioscientists and aerospace engineers.

The day-to-day research will involve application of dynamic systems analysis and control theory approaches for the study of biological systems and in silico evolution and agent-based modelling. Thus, the successful applicants will be able to follow and distil biological literature, develop mathematical models of biological systems, write computer simulations of biological systems and their evolution analyse system dynamics and distil research findings in a comprehensive way. They should also be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies. Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

For further information please contact Dr Orkun S. Soyer, e-mail [email protected] or telephone (01392) 723615.

The full range of necessary skills and experience can be found in the Job Description and Person Specification document http://www.admin.ex.ac.uk/personnel/jobs/N2389.pdf

The closing date for completed applications is 12 noon 22 April 2011.

The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer which is 'Positive About Disabled People': if you have a disability, you should mention this in your application. Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented in the workforce.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION:

Send your application CV, covering letter and the details of three referees to Dr Orkun S. Soyer at [email protected] quoting the reference number N3289 in any correspondence.
