The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £31,905 to £38,594 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, University College London National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London

The Brain Injury Research Group (BIRG) is an internationally recognised multidisciplinary group developing novel methods for monitoring brain circulation and metabolism after brain injury. Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join a project combining signal processing and mathematical modelling to extract clinically relevant information from measurements on brain injured patients. The successful applicant will hold responsibility for the processing and analysis of data from a number of clinical and research monitoring systems.

The post is available immediately and will be funded for two years, in the first instance.

Applicants should have a good relevant honours degree and a PhD or comparable research experience in an area with significant mathematical content. The successful candidate will enjoy the challenge of working with real data, and be familiar with a range of techniques for processing and analysing multivariate data-sets. They will also be ready to develop and modify algorithms to maximise the efficiency of such analysis. Working within a multidisciplinary team of mathematical modellers, physicists, engineers and clinicians, they will be comfortable communicating their conclusions to both specialists and non-specialists.

Essential requirements include; experience and knowledge of a wide range of statistical and signal processing techniques; a high degree of competence in programming, preferably on UNIX based platforms; and an ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team. Some knowledge of optimisation strategies, familiarity with hardware systems interfacing, and experience of open source software development would all be an advantage.
