      Prof. Chris Ponting

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic senior post-doctoral scientist to join Prof Chris Ponting’s research group in the internationally renowned MRC Functional Genomics Unit within the University of Oxford.

You will join a research group that has established an international reputation for genome-scale data analyses, disease genomics, and function prediction for coding or non-coding sequence. This is one of three MRC-funded posts which form the core of Professor Chris Ponting’s Computational Genomics group. The post will provide core biological and computational expertise in disease and trait genomics and in next-generation sequence analysis, and thus will contribute to a shift in the group’s emphasis from comparing genomes among species, to comparing those within a population; from evolution to molecular mechanism; and, from function to molecular pathoaetiology.

With a PhD / DPhil in the field of computational biology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics or comparative genomics, experience of scripting (e.g. Perl/Python), advanced UNIX and administering a Linux system are essential. Expertise in sequence analysis tools in biological research, a strong publication record, current bioinformatics tools and resources, functional genomics and method development will also be expected. Excellent organisational and communication skills will be required, together with the ability to work well within a team.

You will work in the MRC Unit within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford. The Functional Genomics Unit is a world-renowned centre for comparative genomics and research into neurological disorders. We offer excellent computational and laboratory facilities in the Henry Wellcome Building of Gene Function. Additional information about the Unit can be found at www.mrcfgu.ox.ac.uk, whilst informal enquiries can be made to Prof. Chris Ponting at [email protected]. For further information about the MRC please visit www.mrc.ac.uk.

This open-ended position is available immediately. Starting salary will be in the range £35,935 to £39,723 pa, depending on experience. You will be entitled to benefits including 30 days annual leave, an excellent pension scheme and access to MRC training.

Applications are handled by the RCUK Shared Services Centre; to apply please visit our job board at https://ext.ssc.rcuk.ac.uk and complete an online application form. Applicants who would like to receive this advert in an alternative format (e.g. large print, Braille, audio or hard copy), or who are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone on 01793 867003. Please quote reference number IRC13384.

Application deadline: 8 March 2011. Interviews to be held: 21-22 March 2011
