Associate Research Fellow

The College is seeking to appoint an Associate Research Fellow for 22 months on an EU project (OPTIJECT – ‘a novel spectroscopic instrument for in-line monitoring during injection moulding’) to support the work of Dr Oana Ghita. The objective of this proposal is to improve the quality of injection moulded polymer parts by developing a novel in-line process monitoring and control system based on near infrared (NIR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy that is capable of measuring in real-time critical parameters of the injection moulding process, such as filling/flow speed, temperature and most specifically the polymer colour and the presence of undesirable compounds for the quality of the injected components such as humidity or non-desired proportions of additives.
This EU funded post is available immediately. The successful applicant will ideally possess an engineering background with a PhD in material science or should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the area with several years of experience. The successful candidate is expected to have good understanding of spectral techniques (such as Near IR, Raman and UV-VIS) and analytical equipment in general. They should also be able to address applied engineering problems as well as fundamental polymer research.
Candidates will be expected to liaise closely with the European industrial partners of the project, make regular trips to their respective manufacturing sites. As part of his/her duties, the successful candidate will be required to follow the work-programme of the project (prepare and characterise samples, design suitable experiments to solve problems, analyse and interpret data, prepare monthly technical reports for the funding body). The successful applicant will also be expected to present on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

The starting salary will be £ 24,370 on Grade E, depending on qualifications and experience.

For further information please contact Dr Oana Ghita, e-mail [email protected] or telephone (01392) 263667. To apply, please submit an application form or CV and covering letter with the contact details of three referees, to Dr Oana Ghita, quoting the job reference N2760.

The closing date for completed applications is 12 noon on 22nd of February 2011. Interviews are expected to take place on 10th of March 2011.

The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer and promotes diversity in its workforce and, whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, is particularly keen to consider applications from groups currently underrepresented in the workforce.

Application packs are available from http://admin.exeter.ac.uk/personnel/jobs/N2760.pdf
