The UWS (former- Paisley) Nuclear Physics Group (http://nuclear.paisley.ac.uk/) is seeking to recruit a research associate to support research into the fission and spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The post is funded by an STFC grant aimed at a series of experiments at SHIP (GSI, Germany), ISOLDE (CERN, Switzerland) and JAEA (Tokai, Japan). The Nuclear Group is also involved in experimental work at INFN Legnaro (PRISMA/AGATA), at the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory, Jyväskylä, Finland (RITU/JUROGAM) and at the Argonne National Laboratory (GAMMASPHERE). We are also involved in the SCAPA (Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators) project.
Funding for the post is available for 24 months in the first instance. You should be an enthusiastic and committed experimentalist. Experience of working in fission, charged particle spectroscopy and/or in gamma-ray spectroscopy using large arrays of escape-suppressed Ge detectors, although not essential, would be an advantage. Understanding of nuclear physics experiments with laser-based techniques is desirable.

Experience in the use of data sorting codes and in the analysis of multiparameter events using data analysis packages is essential. An ability to programme in FORTRAN, C or C++ would also be desirable.

Informal enquiries about this post should be directed to Professor Andrei Andreyev (email: [email protected], http://nuclear.paisley.ac.uk/research/lead-region.html).

Recruitment packs may be obtained from the Department of Human Resources, Tel No 0141 848 3561 (24 hour answering service) or by e-mail to [email protected] quoting Ref 11/010
