Research Technician in Molecular Plant Pathology

Investigating the epidemiology of new Potato Blight (Phytophthora infestans) genotypes on the island of Ireland and their impact on future control strategies.
Following the successful securing of funds through the Irish Department of Agriculture’s Research Stimulus Fund, we (Teagasc and AFBI) are seeking candidates for a one year contract Technician post to participate in an integrated, multi-institutional project.
The goal of this project is to underpin future strategies for the effective control of potato late blight on the island of Ireland, where combined control and yield loss costs associated with blight exceed €11 million p.a. Major changes have occurred in blight populations in Ireland over the last thirty years. In the last four years, a new A2 strain has appeared and dominated the population in Ireland. When present with existing A1 genotypes there is risk of formation of soil-borne oospores, the long-lived resting bodies of P. infestans, which may render infected land uneconomic for potato production. Determining the extent of sexual reproduction in the new population will help formulate effective control measures.
