Project Title: Role of Infection in Neurodegenerative Disease

In this post you will examine the effects of infection by the brain parasite Toxoplasma on neuronal cells. You will apply molecular and biochemical techniques to neuronal cell lines infected with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma and examine effects on neurotransmitter signalling. These studies will increase our understanding of how this parasite affects neuronal cells and neuronal cell survival and provide a mechanistic link to neurological diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease and psychoses including schizophrenia and behavioural changes. This project is in collaboration with Professor Chris Peers and Dr. Phil Robinson (also at the University of Leeds) and is funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust.

You must have or expect to be awarded shortly a PhD in cell biology, neurobiology, biochemistry or a related discipline. We require a highly motivated and solution-oriented scientist able to work well with others. You will have established skills in relevant basic aspects of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell cultivation. Specific knowledge of neurobiology and/or infection will be an advantage. Training and experience will be gained at the Faculties of Biological Sciences and Medicine, University of Leeds. Together we are excellently equipped for the project and offer a stimulating environment in which post-doctoral scientists can develop a career.

University Grade 7(£29,853 - £35,646 p.a.) it is likely that the appointment will be made at £29,853 p.a. due to funding limitations.
