Computational Scientist in Computational Fluid Dynamics and High Performance Computing (3 year fixed-term)

    Salary £36,033 per annum

    About Us
At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) you belong to a community of experts who are driving science and technology forward. Our incredible diversity of research, technology and engineering projects truly fire the imagination and lead to real-world solutions which shape societies and transform lives. We give you the flexibility, the freedom and the world-class facilities to focus on what you do best, and play your part in breakthroughs and achievements that will give you lifelong pride.

    About The Role
We currently have a vacancy for a talented post-doctoral researcher to become a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate. This project is supported through Innovate UK and has a strong industrial research focus and the Associate will be working closely with Waters, a world-leading developer of mass spectrometry instrumentation, and the Computational Engineering Group at Daresbury Laboratory. The work will involve advanced software development combining computational fluid dynamics and high performance computing. Ideally the person will be familiar with kinetic theory and rarefied gas dynamics and knowledge of direct simulation Monte Carlo methods would be an advantage. The successful candidate will primarily be based at Waters (Wilmslow) with periods spent at Daresbury Laboratory developing and implementing software on massively parallel computers. The work will initially take place within a 3-year fixed-term project and the Associate will lead the development of an in-house capability to simulate rarefied multi-scale flow and ion/droplet transport in a mass-spectrometry device to enhance the understanding of the multi-physics processes in the different stages of the device.

    About You
You must hold, or be about to finish, a Doctorate degree (or equivalent).

Candidates with a good knowledge of fluid dynamics, kinetic theory, or droplet transport are welcome to apply and the post may be particularly suitable to researchers with appropriate experience in cognate fields such as Physics, Numerical Analysis, Applied Mathematics or Mechanical Engineering.

Ability to work on their own initiative and within a team on a range of projects will be expected.

    Benefits
An excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages.

Applications are handled by UKSBS; for full details of this position and to apply please visit our jobs board.
