Research Associate in Surgical Vision and Surgical Skill Analysis for Fetal Surgery

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £33,353 - £40,313 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

UCL was awarded in 2014, £10 million to develop better tools and imaging techniques that will improve the success of surgery and other therapies on unborn babies in collaboration with KU Leuven, Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospital.
We are seeking a post-doctoral research associate to work on developing surgical vision techniques to advance real-time information processing of images acquired in utero using a fetoscope and using ultrasound. The candidate will develop techniques which can be applied to the challenging data to perform imaging system calibration between devices.
Additionally, the candidate will additionally investigate how calibrated systems are used by clinicians and how trainees develop clinical skills to manage imaging systems and other instruments. We are interested in finding the learning curve of clinical staff and how it is affected by novel imaging information.

The project is ambitious and widely scoped and therefore there will be exciting opportunities to link vision research to robotics and mechatronics, new methods for biophotonic imaging, advanced visualization and efficient computational processing.

This post is funded for 2 years in the first instance by the Wellcome Trust and EPSRC.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in computer vision, medical image computing, biomedical engineering or a comparable subject. They will also have specialised in at least two of the following areas: Motion tracking and reconstruction, detection and recognition, geometric vision or photometric processing, surgical skill analysis and/or use of computer vision libraries and tools (OpenCV, PCL). They will have a strong background in computer vision, image processing or medical image computing as well as the ability to work effectively within a collaborative environment.
