    About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.

    About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the Extreme Conditions (I15) beamline team for up to 3 years. This post is funded by the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) and it is a joint position between Diamond Light Source (DLS) in the UK and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. The PDRA will be based at DLS but is expected to work across both campuses, spending extended periods of time on the I15 beamline at DLS as well as the ADDAMS beamline at PSI.

The I15 beamline is optimised for X-ray powder and single-crystal diffraction experiments at extreme pressures and temperatures. The main device for creating high-pressure is the diamond-anvil cell. A wide range of on- and off-line laser facilities are available to complement the diffraction techniques.

The ADDAMS Beamline within the upgraded SLS 2.0, at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), is a general diffraction beamline, with different experimental tables and setups dedicated to advanced diffraction measurements and experiments. Standard Diamond anvil cells are among the in-situ devices operated normally.

To expand the high-pressure experimental capabilities, we are seeking a PDRA with experience in high-pressure, low-temperature diamond-anvil cell X-ray diffraction measurements. The aim of the project is to implement high-pressure low-temperature powder and single-crystal diffraction experiments for I15’s user community. The successful candidate will work closely with the beamline team at DLS and PSI to develop, install and commission the new cryostat for diamond-anvil cells, as well as actively pursue their own, independent research programme in an area relevant to beamlines. Some beamline operation and development, including user support, directly related to the project will be required.

    About You

The successful candidate will have an appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification and a second degree in an appropriate subject. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant science or engineering area and experience in performing high-pressure low-temperature diamond-anvil cell diffraction experiments, ideally at large scale facilities.

You will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact with staff and facility users at all levels.

    Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.

    To Apply

Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.

The initial closing date for applications is 14th April 2024 and a provisional interview data is 1st May 2024. However applications will be reviewed and interviewed on an ongoing basis until this vacancy is filled.
