The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top four cancer centres globally.

The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

    Vacancy Description
Postdoctoral positions in synthetic and medicinal chemistry applied to the discovery and optimisation of new drugs to treat cancer patients are available in the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research (https://www.icr.ac.uk/our-research/our-research-centres/cancer-research-uk-cancer-therapeutics-unit). The successful candidates will apply their synthetic organic chemistry skills to prepare molecules of interest as anticancer agents, working in collaboration with scientists in the Cancer Therapeutics Unit and our commercial partner. The successful candidates are expected to develop skills in medicinal chemistry, as well as a broader understanding of drug discovery.
The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research is a multidisciplinary 'bench to bedside' centre, dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Our exciting goal is to discover high quality drug candidates for validated biological targets and to progress these candidate compounds to clinical trial. Our chemists are located in well-equipped laboratories in Sutton, South London, where they work in close collaboration with world-class biologists and drug metabolism specialists to develop new small molecules that target important proteins involved in the development and progression of cancer.

Knowledge, experience and achievement in synthetic chemistry are essential. Familiarity with medicinal chemistry approaches is desirable. The successful applicants will have opportunities to develop additional skills in post. This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiastic, committed chemist to make an important contribution to improved therapies for cancer patients, while gaining experience and training in drug discovery skills in an institute with a track record of success.

Appointment will be for 2 years in the first instance. Starting salary will be between Points 1 – 4 on The Institute of Cancer Research PDTF Pay Scale (£ 30,410 – £ 37,383) dependent on qualifications and experience.
