The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
A full-time postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at UCL to work on an NIHR BRC-funded position to identify genes involved in causing hearing loss and dementia.
The post-holder will be a key member of the data analysis team involved with the processing, analysis and integration of distinct next generation sequencing and multiple omics data and clinical phenotype information.
The main aim of the programme is to identify genetic causes of hearing loss and dementia as well as clinical diagnostic markers of disease severity or disease progression. The post offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative computational and statistical methods to fully exploit large-scale patient orientated biological datasets. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed and highly motivated individual to become part of a multidisciplinary research environment aiming to combine genomic, molecular phenotype and imaging information to provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of hearing loss and dementia.
The post is funded for 3 years in the first instance.
We are particularly interested in individuals with either expertise in computational biology and the statistical analysis and interpretation of large scale biological datasets, or alternatively in the development of computational methods and tools for processing multi omics data and implementing them in a scientific context. More specifically, the post-holder will require expertise in the analysis of next generation sequencing data (including whole exome sequencing and RNA-seq data) and in the analysis of genome wide association studies. This is a joint appointment (available from October 1st 2017) between the Deafness and Hearing Problems BRC and the Healthcare, Engineering and Imaging (HEI) BRC.
Applicants will ideally hold a PhD in computational biology, computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics and/or engineering, or in a biological science with demonstrated experience in computational and statistical work. Proficiency with at least one high-level programming language and/or appropriate scripting languages and statistical data analysis tools is required.
A background in human biology or previous experience tackling biological questions in relation to human disease is beneficial but not essential.
