Robotics Developer – Two positions as Research Fellow or post-graduate Research Assistant in Perception and Autonomy/System Integration for Agricultural Robots (CBS Robotics, Lincoln UK)

    The University of Lincoln and CBS Robotics are working together on developing robots to assist fruit pickers in the field. These specific posts are with CBS Robotics, but the candidates will work very closely with the University of Lincoln.
    Location: Brayford, Lincoln
    Salary: From £32,548 per annum
    Fixed Term for approximately 2 year
    Closing Date: Open
    Interview Date: To be confirmed
    Reference: IUK-Transportation
    We are looking to recruit a postdoctoral Research Fellow, Researcher, or Developer with a research profile in system science and engineering to be embedded in the RAS-Berry project. This project will develop autonomous fleets of robots for in-field transportation to aid and complement human fruit pickers. In particular, the project will consider strawberry production in polytunnels. A solution for autonomous in-field transportation will significantly decrease strawberry production costs and be the first step towards fully autonomous robotic systems for berry production.
    The project will develop a dedicated mobile platform together with software components for fleet management, long-term operation and safe human-robot collaboration in strawberry production facilities.
    RAS-Berry is a collaboration between the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and University of Lincoln, and is looking to employ a total of six postdocs/researchers and four PhD students at this stage. The successful candidates will have access to state-of-the art research farms that will be equipped with production facilities with industrial standard. The project also has access to a wide variety of agricultural robots with advanced sensors and tools. This equipment is already installed on the research farms and will be made available to the project. There is a strong focus on developing solutions that are robust in realistic scenarios, and extensive field testing is therefore required. In order to coordinate the work of everyone involved in the project, several workshops will be held both in Norway and the UK.
    For the Autonomy/System Integration post, we are looking to recruit a highly competent researcher with relevant experience and/or a strong interest in a number of research areas, including (not exclusively):
    • Localization and Navigation;
    • Long-term autonomy for mobile robots;
    • Learning for autonomous systems;
    • Remote management and operations of largely autonomous system;
    • Shared autonomy and distributed systems;
    • Software engineering in robotics; and
    • Integration and orchestration of robotic systems.
    For the Perception post, we are looking to recruit a highly competent researcher with relevant experience and/or a strong interest in a number of research areas, including (not exclusively):

    • Computer Vision;
    • Machine learning;
    • Localization and Navigation;
    • Long-term autonomy for mobile robots;
    • Sensing in outdoor environments;
    • Sensor fusion;
    The postholder will be at the center of this exciting project, collaborating closely with other researcher, taking a leading role in the integration and orchestration of the system architecture. Applicants should have, or expect to soon obtain, a PhD in a relevant area, or possess relevant and equivalent practical experience. You must have very good mathematical and coding skills (C++/Python, ROS). The position offers the opportunity to engage in international collaboration within an ambitious team, to work with state-of-the-art robotic hardware and software, and to benefit from excellent support to produce world-leading robotic systems for the agricultural domain.
    This particular position will be at CBS Robotics, located in Lincoln UK. CBS Robotics develops robots for the agricultural domain in close collaboration with Saga Robotics in Norway and University of Lincoln and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with all these partners.
    Please send applications to:
    Professor Pål Johan From, [email protected] with full CV and Cover Letter.
    There is no deadline for the positions; candidates will be evaluated once we receive applications.
