      Professor Francesco Paparella

    Post-Doctoral Associate
    Division of Sciences and Mathematics
    NYU Abu Dhabi

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position on Lagrangian numerical methods for studying ocean dynamics with Professor Francesco Paparella at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). The appointment will be for one year with potential for further two-years renewal, starting no later than Spring 2018.

The successful candidate will be in charge of developing a Lagrangian numerical code running as a subsystem of an ocean circulation model (ROMS will be the initial testbed). The code will differ from current Lagrangian codes in being focused on on-line (that is, running synchronously with the circulation model) calculations with a number of particles comparable with the number of Eulerian grid nodes. The focus will initially be on elucidating the advantages of on-line vs off-line calculations. In the long run the goal is to use it as the foundation for innovative biogeochemical modelling. The post-doc will have direct access to NYUAD’s high performance computing facility (the Dalma cluster), and will be working in close contact with post-doc and researchers of the Center for Prototype Climate Modeling (http://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/research/nyuad-institute/institute-research/cpcm.html), joining a small team of scientists engaged in a broad effort to develop Lagrangian models to understand and model Ocean and Atmospheric dynamics. Funds will be available for travel to conferences and for other collaborative endeavors.

Applicants must hold a PhD in ocean/atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics or related fields. The successful applicant will have significant experience in developing numerical codes in Fortran or C, in addition to running parallel code on high performance computing facilities and analyzing its outputs. Familiarity with ocean or atmospheric circulation models, and in particular with ROMS will be a plus.

The terms of employment are very competitive. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and at least 2 letters of recommendation, all in PDF format.
