    Job Title: Research Fellow in Navigation and Guidance
    Contract Type: Fixed term for 18 months
    Salary: Salary Level 5 – range £31,620 to £35,244 per annum (with additional performance related pay up to £44,055 per annum)

    This post offers challenging and stimulating opportunities for researchers with a background in Navigation and Guidance for Space and/or Aerospace Autonomous Vehicles. You will have the chance to work and technically manage activities of an H2020 European project on Autonomous Space Rendezvous with prestigious industrial organisations. You will work very closely with Thales Alenia Space France and Thales Alenia UK to name few. Working on other industrially funded projects on imaging based navigation and guidance for Aerospace and Ground autonomous vehicles are also part of the duties of this post.

    Signals and Autonomy Group is one of the six groups of Centre for Electronic Warfare, Information and Cyber. Internationally reputable, the Group covers a wide variety of topics encompassing; Vision based Navigation systems, Autonomous Vehicles, Security, Automatic Object Recognition, 2D/3D Mapping, and Guidance and Control Techniques.

    Main responsibilities include:

    • To perform research in Navigation and Guidance for Space and Aerospace Vehicles
    • To publish high quality journals/reports based on the research carried out
    • To manage/participate in the daily basis interaction with our research and industrial partners
    • To assist in the supervision of MSc/PhD research projects and to advise students on their progress
    • To assist in the writing of grant proposals related to areas in imaging, navigation, guidance and autonomous systems

    You will have a PhD (or nearing completion) in an appropriate field with significant expertise in navigation systems and in estimation theory (Kalman filters, particle filters…etc) and/or guidance techniques from industrial or academic exposure; a track record of publishing in high quality journals and knowledge of sensors for autonomous applications (Air, Space or Ground); Matlab/C++ programming skills.

    Knowledge of image processing/computer vision exposure is desirable.
