Postdoctoral Research Assistant

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) as part of a large multi-institute networking centre funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The “Centre for Advanced Materials for Integrated Energy Systems (CAM-IES)” is a joint centre involving Cambridge, Newcastle, QMUL, UCL and multiple industrial partners. The overall objectives of CAM-IES are to create a UK-based community of researchers focused on materials for Integrated Energy Systems and to develop advanced materials for energy storage, specifically solid-state batteries, coatings for high voltage electrode battery materials, and flow batteries, and energy conversion, specifically solid-oxide fuel cells, CO2 gas separation membranes, hybrid thin film photovoltaics and large-area thermoelectrics. It will exploit currently unexplored synergies between these different energy fields, in particular in the context of characterisation, scientific understanding and control of the key interfaces in these devices.

This particular research position will focus on the synthesis and characterization of novel conjugated organic materials for use in organic electronics, specifically focusing on the development of new materials for efficient, large-area thermoelectrics. The successful applicant will synthesise materials for conjugated polymer - carbon nanotube based thermoelectrics which will be tested in collaboration with the other partners across the centre. The successful applicant will work within the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at QMUL under the direct supervision of Dr Christian Nielsen but will also collaborate closely with the other partners of the CAM-IES.

The ideal candidate for this position should have a PhD in organic chemistry or a related field and be able to work effectively and sociably within a team and have an interest/knowledge in materials science. Experience in conjugated small molecule and polymer synthesis and the ability to interact within an interdisciplinary research area are vital.
This is a full-time, fixed term post available for 18 months with a start date of 1st July 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary is £34,183 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, final salary pension scheme and an interest–free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Christian Nielsen via e-mail: [email protected].
