The Translational Imaging Group invites applications for Mechatronics Engineering Research Associates with experience in Image-Guided Robotic Micro-Surgery. This is an exciting opportunity for keen Researchers / Engineers with relevant skills in this area to join an internationally leading research group, and work on an innovative surgical system for retinal stem-cell implantation.

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) will be involved in the design of a next generation multi-arm flexible robot with on-board imaging. The goal of the project is to develop a flexible robot to facilitate novel interventions to ocular structure, including retinal stem-cell delivery and thrombolytic drug deposition. The PDRA can emphasize on robot design and engineering, investigation of novel modelling approaches for multi-arm flexible robots, shared position/force control algorithms, and the translation of the developed approaches to the benchtop system. The PDRA will be given to freedom to submit M.Sc./M.Res. projects, as well as become part of PhD Student supervision.

The project is financially supported through an ERC Starting Grant. The post holder will be employed within the Translational Imaging Group, part of UCL’s Centre of Medical Image Computing. Strong interactions with Moorfields Eye Hospital under the supervision of Prof. Lyndon da Cruz will ensure the clinical relevance of the contributions. The project is well linked with the recent Wellcome Trust / EPSRC investment at UCL to create a Centre for Surgical and Interventional Sciences, as well as with the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering. This post is funded for one year in the first instance.

Candidates must have a PhD, equivalent qualification, or equivalent industrial experience in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or closely related field. Candidates must possess a first or upper second undergraduate degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, or related subject, and must demonstrate excellent engineering and communication skills. A strong publication record is expected.

All candidates must have demonstrable experience of mechatronics system design, modelling, and development, especially in an image-guided robotic surgery context. Familiarity with flexible robots and their modelling is highly desirable. Experience with Computer-Aided Design software (e.g. Solidworks) and scientific computing platforms (e.g. Matlab/Simulink) is necessary. Familiarity with Robot Programming (e.g. via ROS) would be desirable.

Interested candidates are welcome to contact Dr Christos Bergeles, email: [email protected] for an informal discussion.
