Post Doctorate in Ocean Biogeochemistry and Autonomous Vehicles (Fixed Term, Full Time)
    Ocean Biogeochemistry & Ecosystems (OBE)
    National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton

    About the role:
We are seeking to recruit a biogeochemical oceanographer with experience in autonomous vehicles to join an exciting multi-disciplinary project with responsibility for analysis and interpretation of glider data to achieve project aims. You will play a central role in delivering the ERC-funded GOCART project and an active part in the research and education functions of NOC’s Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems group. A requirement of this role will be to develop and carry out original research using glider data to address key questions in ocean biology/biogeochemistry, in particular concerning the flux and remineralisation of organic carbon.

You will focus on quantifying temporal variability in carbon flux and remineralisation and will contribute to delivering world-class research into the biological carbon pump. This includes, but is not restricted to, participating in deployments of autonomous vehicles, calibration and data processing, analysis of bio-optical data and data synthesis activities. The project includes two glider deployments, which are planned in the Southern Ocean and Benguela upwelling regions alongside process cruises.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for four years, offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates. The post will start on 1st September 2017.

    Salary:
This is a Band 6 position and the salary band will be £28,200 to £30,600 per annum. Depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.

    Hours of Work:
The hours of working are full time, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This role includes sea-going activities.

    About you:
You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and an understanding of open ocean biophysical interactions, in particular, relating to spatio-temporal variability and/or the biological carbon pump. You will also have experience in using autonomous vehicles, particularly gliders, to investigate biophysical interactions and/or the biological carbon pump in the open ocean and experience of bio-optical sensors and associated data analysis. You will have expertise with data analysis software, particularly Matlab and good Mathematical skills. Publication of peer-reviewed papers of relevance to the post would be ideal.

    What we can offer you:
In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including an RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off and free on site car-parking. Opportunities for further training and development are supported.
