Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management.
Staff working within SWEE lead in delivering solutions for the ‘green economy’, a rapidly integrated perspective on the world characterised by the opportunities of next generation sustainability.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Researcher, with expertise in Biochemistry, to strengthen our Agrifood group. We are dedicated to research, consultancy and education in postharvest biology and technology of fresh produce in Europe. We service all sectors of the fresh produce supply chain including many of the major multinational food companies, multiple food retailers and undertake research for both national and international Governments, research councils, and levy bodies.

You will work on the TSB-funded and industry-funded project “Extending the availability and flavour-life of UK apples using innovative photonics”. You will be responsible for the experimental set up and maintenance of storage trials at Cranfield University and for the varied analysis needs (both physiological and biochemical). Data will be collected to develop a new dynamic model(s) of temporal changes in apple quality with renewed emphasis on flavour-life and taste-related attributes and internal disorders. You will identify new pre-symptomatic biomarkers of flavour life and specific disorders at harvest and through storage. Targeted metabolomic analysis of flavour-related volatiles and phenylpropanoids will be carried out using TD GC-ToF MS and UPLC QToF MS/MS, respectively.

You will have a PhD obtained (or close to completion) in Biochemistry or Applied Biology and extensive and demonstrable applied experience in biochemical analysis and metabolomics. Knowledge of stakeholder analysis and engagement is also essential.

You will have strong experience in detecting bio-markers and extensive knowledge of data analysis and management. You will have excellent project and time management skills, ensuring that milestones and deliverables are achieved to time and to high quality. You will be able to work in multidisciplinary teams and produce high quality manuscripts.

At Cranfield we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential.

Your research career at Cranfield will be enhanced through access to fully equipped shared laboratory and pilot facilities, extensive research and business training through our learning and development team and doctoral training centres in a collegiate and supportive environment.
