    Applications are invited for a Research Scientist to work on a 3 year project in the Gut Health and Food Safety Programme at the Institute of Food Research, investigating the metabolism of sialic acid by gut bacteria.

    The post-holder will carry out in vitro work (anaerobic cultures, heterologous expression, enzymatic assays), in vivo colonisation (mouse models) and contribute to carbohydrate (NMR, HPLC, MS) and microbiome analyses (16S sequencing).

    A PhD degree in Biological Sciences and previous research experience in molecular biology, microbiology and protein/carbohydrate chemistry is essential.

    The post-holder will work closely with collaborators on the Norwich Research Park involved in the project. In addition to the proposed experimental work, the post-holder will contribute to the research by interacting with Research Scientists and PhD students in the Juge Group, writing-up reports and publications, and presenting at relevant meetings and Conferences. The post-holder will also be encouraged to join public engagement activities. In addition, they will benefit from regular BBSRC-sponsored training courses in career development and transferable skills.

    In 2018, research teams from IFR, the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Science and Norwich Medical School and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals’ gastrointestinal endoscopy facility will integrate into the Quadram Institute, a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research at the heart of the Norwich Research Park.     Salary on appointment will be within the range £30,750 to £37,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 3 years.
