Postdoctoral Scientist - Structural Studies - LMB 445

    Postdoctoral Scientist – Structural Studies
Starting Salary £30,162 to £32,975 per annum
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge UK

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to join the group of Dr Julian Gough to work on cell fate and evolution. Specifically, to undertake research to investigate human cell reprogramming. We have created a system ‘Mogrify’ based on cellular networks to predict transcription factors for reprogramming one human cell type into another (Rackham et al. Nature Genetics 2016). This has been experimentally validated by proving several novel conversions, and we are validating many more. There is a great deal more research to do on cell reprogramming, e.g. with regard to: epigenetic factors, down-regulation, different sequencing technologies, sources of network interactions and synthetic cell types. The work is anticipated to be predominantly computational and theoretical but could optionally include some laboratory work.

You are highly motivated, have a PhD in a relevant subject, and you have an aptitude for theoretical work and data analysis. The post is available to applicants with varying computational experience. Applicants with no formal training in computational or mathematical work but who enjoy it, have self-taught to a high level, the aptitude and are keen to learn will be considered, if they have other complimentary biological qualifications, knowledge and experience. Conversely computer or technical scientists with no formal training in molecular biology will be considered if they have a powerful interest and motivation in molecular biology and are driven to learn.

The successful applicant will be awarded a 3 year Career Development Fellowship/MRC Postdoctoral Training Scheme. The fellowship is a training and development position for a Postdoctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, or is moving into a new research discipline. There will also be the opportunity to work with biotech companies internationally and in the Cambridge area to translate the technology for medical use and commercialisation.

Working for the MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a final salary pension scheme, Benenden Healthcare membership and excellent holiday entitlement. You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare vouchers.
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is one of the birthplaces of molecular biology and is an internationally renowned centre for fundamental biomedical research. The LMB has a strong track record in training Postdoctoral Fellows who have gone on to become leading Scientists. We also have an excellent record of innovative basic research leading to applications in medicine. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.
