Job Description: An exciting opportunity is available for an outstanding postdoctoral Research Fellow candidate to contribute to research in Neurology This postdoctoral fellowship will provide a research training experience, designed to develop broad-based expertise in research in neuroscience and immunology, and to develop the skills required for independent research. The training occurs in the context of the activities in the Neurology department at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed). Activities in the Center are focused on experimental research approaches in translational microbiome research, immunology techniques such as antibody generation, isolation and purification; immunoblotting, ELISA approaches and education, and knowledge transfer. LA BioMed is one of the country’s leading non-profit biomedical research institutes, located on the campus of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles County. LA BioMed conducts biomedical research, trains young scientists and clinicians, and fulfills its mission to serve the underserved within the local community. The research fellowship is a full-time fixed-term appointment for one year in the first instance, and is renewable dependent on the candidate’s progress for at least three years. The major purpose of this training is to prepare the individual for a career in academia or industry in bioscience or medicine. Fellows will receive training in writing protocols, manuscripts and grant applications, and in conducting basic research, with an emphasis on increasing independence. The primary mentor for the fellow will be Bijal Mehta, MD. Institutional support will be available for grant development, preparation and submission. It is anticipated that, at the end of the training, the highly qualified and skilled individual will be well placed to launch into a productive research career. The fellowship will focus upon translational approaches for in vitro experimental model systems, including the investigation of disease mechanisms and the development of experimental strategies. Requirements: The Research Fellow will hold a PhD or equivalent in a subject allied to neuroscience, microbiology, immunology or related discipline. Experience or interest in the following is desirable: neuroscience, microbiology, immunology; develop and execute in vitro experimental model systems to study host microbial interaction utilizing anaerobic bacteria, knowledge of statistical software, Matlab, C, Python, Perl or other languages; proactively identify and leverage advances in microbiome research interface between basic sciences and medicine; translational research. Excellent communication and presentational skills are essential, as is the ability to work successfully in a highly collegial team. *Position requires a background check and health clearance Please apply on-line @
