Senior Research Scientist In Emissions And Atmospheric Metrology

    About the Role
NPL is the UK’s National Metrology Institute. Our role is to research, create and deliver the measurement infrastructure which underpins the UK’s prosperity and quality of life across many fields of industry. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking experienced Senior Research Scientists to join our team in Teddington in touching ordinary lives in extraordinary ways.

We are looking for a Senior Research Scientist to join NPL’s emissions and atmospheric metrology group to provide technical leadership in either the emissions or atmospheric measurement teams.

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will be joining a growing team of leading scientists working in the field of emissions and atmospheric metrology. You will have access to state-of-the-art measurement instrumentation in this flexible science-based role and be working in a purpose-built laboratory.

If you were already working for us in this Senior Research Scientist role, here are some of the things you would have done last week:
Led cutting-edge research, either from a fundamental aspect or the application of methods towards policy or commercial impact
Represented NPL as needed to promote our work and raise our profile
Crafted winning bids, in line with NPL’s growth strategy
Worked inclusively and collaboratively to develop partnership opportunities
The Emissions and Atmospheric Metrology Group within the Atmospheric Environmental Science Department carries out world-leading measurement science research, disseminates best practice and delivers traceability and calibration of environmental emissions and atmospheric measurements, from the highest point of reference in the laboratory to application in industry. The group provides this range of scientific services to a wide variety of stakeholders including industry, regulators, government and research communities. It delivers the metrology required for future ambient air, atmospheric and emissions monitoring science and develops new methods for measuring greenhouse gases and other emerging pollutants.

    About You
To apply for this research science role, you will need to have significant experience in a similar position, possibly in an environmental research role. You will be recognised as a specialist and leader in your field, an accolade supported by your academic scientific background and a long list of successful research projects and lead author of several peer reviewed publications. Beyond that, we’re looking for someone who’ll thrive in an inclusive and collaborative environment like ours.

The successful candidate will be required to provide technical leadership for one of the research areas within NPL’s Emissions and Atmospheric Metrology Group.

You will have a relevant science or engineering degree, a PhD (or equivalent experience in research), with extensive experience working within a laboratory environment and will be comfortable supporting junior members of the team to plan and delivering scientific work to a high level of standard.

For this Senior Research Scientist position the following previous experience is essential:

Atmospheric or emissions measurements, either in the experimental optimisation and calibration of instrumentation through use of traceable standards or reference materials, and/or in the analysis of measured data in combination with statistical methods or models
Networking, external collaboration and supporting project bidding
Developing strategies for a research theme
These roles will involve a balance of experimental work in the laboratory with data analysis, scientific paper and report writing, equipment maintenance and customer facing activities. You must be able to work independently or as part of a team to achieve goals to advance innovation in the laboratories. Great communication skills and an enthusiasm for science are essential and you will be challenged to think for yourself. You can expect opportunities to solve real-world science and engineering problems in the laboratory. Beyond that, we’re looking for someone who’ll thrive in an environment like ours. These are lab-based positions, at our laboratories in Teddington and you will be expected to work mainly on-site.

If you think you have what it takes to join the Teddington-based NPL team in Senior Research Scientist's role, please apply here today.

Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
