A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Dr Christian Nielsen’s group (https://nielsen-lab.com/) to work on the European Commission-funded project “Mixed Ionic and Electronic Transport in Conjugated Polymers for Bioelectronics” in collaboration with a large European network of academic and industrial partners.

The ideal candidate for this position should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry or a closely related field and be able to work effectively, independently and sociably within a team and have an interest/knowledge in materials science. Experience in conjugated small molecule synthesis, polymer synthesis and/or porous organic materials as well as organic electronic or bioelectronic applications are highly desirable. Self-motivation, the ability to interact confidently within an interdisciplinary research area and excellent research management and presentation skills are essential.

The successful candidate will conduct research on the development of novel organic mixed ionic and electronic conductors. They will also be required to analyse the experimental data and report it in the form of conference presentations and research papers. The successful candidate will join an international, multi-disciplinary team and also interact closely on a regular basis with the large European network through project meetings and partner visits throughout the duration of the project.

Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). At QMUL we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence and we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

The post is located on QMUL’s Mile End campus, it is full-time and initially available for a period of 12 months with a possibility of an extension thereafter. The start date is 1st June 2021 or soon thereafter. The salary is in grade 4, within the range of £31,613 - £34,220 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance.

We offer access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability.
