Chemistry
Research Fellow in Organic Synthesis of Bioluminescent Molecules
Applications are invited for a highly motivated and enthusiastic organic chemist for a Research Fellow post to work in the group of Prof. Jim Anderson (
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemistry/people/prof-jim-c-anderson) in the Department of Chemistry at University College London. His group has been designing and synthesising bright, multicoloured, nr-IR emitting new bioluminescent molecules. The aim of this new project is to develop a molecular-level understanding of bioluminescence for the rational design of new bioluminescence tools for multicolor, deep-tissue imaging. This is a challenging project in synthetic organic chemistry and requires excellence in contemporary practical skills.
The post holder will be required to design and execute flexible synthetic pathways for the preparation of new bioluminescent molecules. The project will make extensive use of modern synthetic approaches as well as a variety of modern spectroscopic techniques.
The position is funded by an EPSRC grant, and the appointment will be for 36 months initially. Start date should be 1st May 2021, or as close to this as possible.
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree (or be about to be awarded a PhD) in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, and possess experience in the following areas: organic synthesis, reaction optimization, compound purification and characterization by spectroscopic techniques. They will have a good publication track record, a demonstrated commitment to excellence, and excellent skills in lab. They will be expected to work in a multidisciplinary collaborative team, and have effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £31,542 to £33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
