The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. For further information please refer to:
www.hzg.deHZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.
At the Institute of Coastal Research about 150 scientists research processes on the coast and interactions between the land, the sea and humans. The objective of the three sub-institutes "Biogeochemistry in Coastal Seas", "Operational Systems" and "System Analysis and Modelling" is to create the scientific basis for sustainable development and future-oriented management of the coasts.
The Institute of coastal research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a 3-year Postdoc position (m/f/d) in Ecosystem Modelling. The Ecosystem Modelling group at the Institute for Coastal Research is an internationally leading player in the field of trait-based ecosystem modeling (
www.hzg.de/ecomod).
Your tasks
Compounding climatic and anthropogenic stressors challenge marine plankton and benthic organisms. Modelling the marine ecosystem can improve the yet poor understanding of the response to multiple stressors and create reliable scenarios that support decision making. The Postdoc position is expected to investigate dependencies of coupled pelagic and benthic food-webs on multiple drivers (e.g. warming, pollution and trawling) in the southern North Sea. You will further develop and run a coupled model system including trait-based ecosystem models on decadal time scales. The work builds on predecessor and ongoing studies and will be a central integral hub of the collaborative project Multiple Stressors on North Sea Life (MuSSeL) funded in the FONA/KÜNO program by BMBF.
Your profile
Applicants with a degree in environmental or related sciences and a background in modelling and ecology, biogeochemistry, oceanography or physics are encouraged to apply. The candidates should demonstrate programming experience (e.g., Fortran) and strong writing skills.
