Main job purpose
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team to develop digital methods to address ecological questions. The core role will be:
1. To lead the development of 3D photogrammetry as a method of quantifying marine growth occurring on man-made structures located in the North Sea
2. To assist in the development of automated faunal identification, via machine leaning/artificial intelligence from 2D and 3D imagery and liaise with industry and regulators to embed the innovations into the offshore sector.
The types of activities you will lead on and contribute to -
Undertake offshore cruises and SCUBA-based sampling of marine fauna. Collect and maintain fauna in aquaria and conduct lab-based biovolume estimation.
Liaise with industry and collate ROV footage for analysis, extract images for analysis. Contribute to the training and assessment of artificial intelligence algorithms and the development of commercialisation of such a tool. Contribute to the production and calibration of 3D models from video footage.
Attributes required to do the job–.
• Self-motivation with proven ability to lead and participate in SCUBA-based research (commercial or equivalent SCUBA certification is highly desirable), with experience of working on research vessels.
• Team working with proven ability to deliver complex inter-related practical and reporting tasks.
• Ability to work with large datasets (images) and undertake image analysis/manipulation and clean-up
• Excellent communication and project management skills, ability to initiate and develop industry contacts, familiarity with ROV-data management and analysis
• Practical, experimental biologist with experience of aquarium-based animal maintenance and research
• Experience in presenting results at national / international conferences and publishing research in quality peer-reviewed academic journals
• Experience in ROV-piloting and machine learning would also be beneficial.
